THE PICNIC: The Dawns Music Review

Rat World is excited to be collaborating with Marmalade to put on The Picnic - a mini music festival on November 16th that aims to showcase upcoming bands, platform music journalism, and put on a fun night to celebrate our local music landscape and arts scene!

Five music journalists are paired up with one of the five bands performing at The Picnic. These Rat Journalists will introduce the bands via a music review and then will conduct a KEXP-style live interview on the night of the festival!

If you’re on the hunt for a fresh genre of music to dive into, allow me to introduce you to the remarkable band, The Dawns! This dynamic four-piece alternative rock group is celebrated for their electrifying sound and vibrant stage presence. They artfully weave together catchy melodies with an eclectic mix of genres that promise to captivate your ears and get you moving on your feet.

When I first encountered their track, ‘Girl Named Sue,’ I was instantly drawn by their unique live instrumentals, as I’ve always had a soft spot for surf rock guitar riffs and crowd vocals as it brings an opportunity to have the crowd involved on the song live. The song was one of my favourites as the lyrics have such good storyboarding about loving a person with such a personality, it may sound like a cheesy love song to most but in my ears; it is more about appreciation and its catchy melodic chorus. The way they use a whammy bar on some chords is such an interesting detail as a summer jam, feeling very eccentric and uplifted with the impression of being at a beach playing as the main character of an old summer movie based in the early 90s.

Experiencing this song live during their set was a pivotal moment for me. It solidified my desire to delve deeper into their music. Mila’s amazing vocals and the energy were standout highlights of the night, truly captivating the audience and keeping everyone in the mosh pit dancing throughout most of ‘Girl Named Sue.’ The lively atmosphere was palpable; it felt like the whole venue was vibrating with excitement as the band performed.

What impressed me most was the band's exceptional ability to engage with the crowd. Their interaction felt genuine and personal, a rare quality among many local bands I’ve seen. It created a wonderful sense of community and connection, drawing everyone into the experience. Imogen and Georgia create the vibe up on stage with their dynamic jumps creating a captivating performance that effortlessly draws you in. Their radical energy has everyone grooving and nodding along, making it impossible not to get swept up in the rhythm.

The unique charm they brought to the stage was refreshing, and it was clear that their passion for music resonated with the audience. Watching them perform was not just a concert but a memorable experience filled with energy and joy.

Discovering The Dawns has not only left me craving more of their unique sound but has also fostered a wonderful connection with them in the local music scene. Their eagerness to hone their craft while embracing the joy of performing creates an exhilarating atmosphere on stage. You can truly see how much they enjoy engaging with their fans, which makes every performance a memorable experience.

Catch The Dawns live at The Tuning Fork, 16th November Saturday for The Picnic Mini Music Festival! And don’t forget to use the code "thedawns" to reveal a secret $10 ticket…
